Last week was definitely an absolute treasure for me! I took a week off from anything work-related, even from writing here, and had some time to simply rest and soak in God’s creation and goodness at my favorite place–the beach!
Right before I left for Florida, I listened to an interview with Ruth Haley Barton on the Carey Nieuwhof Leadership Podcast that seemed so appropriate. She talked a lot about the importance of Sabbath and noted it includes elements of rest, worship, and delight. I was grateful to experience all three of those this past week–walking the beach, sitting out to read and pray while soaking in the sun and waves, and taking a break at the pool or even catching a nap in the middle of the day. What could be better? (P.S. It’s worth checking out the entire podcast episode, too… she even shares some interesting thoughts toward the end about team sports and her own family’s experiences in that department.)
As I’m continuing to come out of the “resting” mode with more contemplations in my heart than words to share, I’m keeping this post short and sweet, but I hope you can be stirred to find time for your own moments, days, or weeks of Sabbath ahead. And I hope you can carve out opportunities to enjoy God’s creation and let that inspire your heart to worship as well.
I love the song So Will I (100 Billion X) by Hillsong United, but I have to say that listening to it while walking the beach with the waves splashing over my feet made its lyrics come alive in different ways. Truly I can say to the Lord, “I can see Your heart in everything You say, every painted sky a canvas of Your grace.”
And my soul wants to declare,
“If the oceans roar Your greatness, so will I.”
I’d love for you to join in the discussion, too. What brings your soul rest? Are there any particular aspects of nature that especially make your heart sing? Do you love the beach, or do you prefer mountains or prairies? What is your favorite season? What brings you delight? How can you find some time for that this week? How will you thank God for His provision?
“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” ~James 1:17 (NIV)
“Come to Me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” ~Matthew 11:28 (HCSB)
